What is a subscriber actually worth?
Lifetime value after the platform's cut, your agency's commission and tax — and therefore what you can sensibly spend to get one.
Why lifetime value, not monthly price
A $10 subscriber isn't worth $10. They're worth $10 times however many months they stay — and then rather less than that, once the platform, any agency and the tax authority have taken their share. Knowing the real figure changes two decisions.
Decision one: what you can spend to get subscribers
If a subscriber is genuinely worth $34 to you, paying $12 for a shoutout that reliably brings in one is a good trade, and agonising over $12 is a waste of your attention. If they're worth $9, it isn't. Most creators have no idea which situation they're in, so they either overspend on promo or refuse to spend at all.
Decision two: churn is worth more than growth
Lifetime value is inversely proportional to churn. Halve your churn and you double what every subscriber is worth — without acquiring a single new person. Nothing on the growth side comes close to that return, and yet almost all the effort goes into acquisition.
Churn is mostly driven by boring things: consistency of posting, whether the first week delivers what the sales page implied, and whether people feel noticed. None of it is glamorous and all of it compounds.
What this can't see
- Everything besides the subscription. Tips, PPV and customs from the same person often exceed the subscription itself, and they're not counted here.
- Different cohorts churn differently. People who found you through a free trial usually leave faster than people who sought you out.
- Win-backs. Some people leave and come back, which the simple lifetime formula ignores.
Treat the number as a floor rather than a ceiling — the real figure is usually a little better, which is the pleasant direction to be wrong in.
Stop doing this in your head every month.
keep.fans tracks your income across every platform and keeps all of this up to date automatically — what you actually keep, what you owe, and whether your agency contract is quietly costing you more than you think.
