What are you actually earning per hour?
Count everything — filming, editing, messaging, promo, admin — and see the real number after the cuts and tax.
Count the invisible hours
The mistake is counting only the hours that produce content. The real total includes replying to messages, editing, planning, promo posting, chasing takedowns, bookkeeping and every unpaid conversation with someone who was never going to subscribe.
For most creators the visible work is well under half the total. Which means the honest hourly rate is well under half of what the gross suggests.
Why it's worth knowing
- It tells you what to outsource. If your real rate is $28 an hour and an editor costs $20, editing yourself is a losing trade — and it's also fully deductible.
- It prices custom work properly. A custom that takes three hours needs to be priced against your rate, not against a feeling.
- It makes the agency question concrete. If an agency gives you back thirty hours a month, that's worth your real rate × 30. Sometimes that beats the commission comfortably.
A fair comparison
Stop doing this in your head every month.
